Family Promise Rochester exists to prevent and end homelessness for families with children and help them achieve sustainable independence. Every family has a unique story that led them to the moment of calling for help. Jackie has dreams of being a nurse so she can care for and help others heal. Along the way, she came to realize that sometimes, healing begins within yourself. Family Promise Rochester was there to walk alongside the journey with her.
When Jackie became pregnant, the clashing of belief systems and nowhere to turn to left her on the street longing for support, love, and care. What followed was not easy and included long nights alone, couch hopping with friends, and coping with inner battles within and realities of having no place to land or call home. When she could no longer stay with a friend, she moved into Family Promise Rochester and, soon after, her baby girl was born.
Together, with a dedicated Family Promise Rochester Housing Specialist and other trusted community resources, she saved her money, found permanent housing, secured childcare for her daughter, established a positive support system, actively participated in the Promise Groups, overcame transportation barriers, and ignited her newfound sense of confidence. Jackie is looking forward to revisiting her career in nursing as she is more settled and further along in her stabilization journey.
Jackie’s future has transformed from long, lonely nights to stability and safety. She says, “My daughter and I are so grateful and crying tears of joy. You took us off the street and made us feel welcome. We will never forget this. Thank you so much.”
