Who We Are
Our mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence.
Overview of Family Promise Rochester
Family Promise Rochester is the only shelter for families in the greater Rochester area. In 2018, we served 536 individuals, through our five programs. Our shelter program provided over 2825 night’s sleep and served over 5,650 meals. Family Promise Rochester works to provide shelter, stability, skills and support to families facing homelessness.
We collaborate with families to identify the obstacles and barriers that lead them to their current situation. We do this by building a strong relationship with the family, accessing resources, creating goals and providing skill-based trainings individualized to the family’s specific needs. These skills include employment seeking, financial literacy, effective parenting, goal setting, professionalism, self-sustaining problem solving and personal empowerment.
Each family goes through an in-depth screening process upon entry to assess their current needs and skills so that we can effectively collaborate with them to strengthen and sustain their family structure. Family Promise Rochester requires families to be consistently working toward established goals in order for them to remain within our shelter program. Upon successful completion,
Family Promise Rochester can then move families into a permanent housing model while maintaining the case management, skill reinforcement and critical empowerment. This is vital to our family’s on-going success.
Family Promise Rochester began over 17 years ago as Interfaith Hospitality Network, a group of churches working together to provide food and shelter for homeless families. The tireless work of these early volunteers has helped us grow and become Family Promise Rochester. Our network continues to serve as a vital component to our organization empowering over 1,400 volunteers per year at 40 host sites to help families overcome homelessness. This model is essential to our philosophy of offering dignified and compassionate assistance creating a supportive community for our families in crisis.
In 2006, we re-branded our organization to Family Promise Rochester and joined a nationwide organization with over 200 affiliates. As Family Promise Rochester, we have added three components to our existing Interfaith Hospitality Network. These additional programmatic branches offer individualized skill building and supports, which are vital factors in
stopping the cycle of poverty and moving families towards sustainable success. Another branch is our Community Housing program which provides long-term stable housing options for families who have successfully completed their goals in the shelter program. The final branch of Family Promise Rochester’s programs is our Family Mentorship Program. This program is in its infancy. It works to pair newly entering families with graduates of the program. This allows families to share their experiences, wisdom and common struggles. We would love to grow the capacity for our Family Mentorship program.
